LED street light external lightning protection combined with internal lightning protection

Generally, the appearance of LED street lights is made of conductive material, which is equivalent to a lightning rod. In the design of LED street lights, down conductors and ground nets must be installed. These LED street light systems constitute an external lightning protection system. The LED street light system can prevent the intrusion of induced lightning and other forms of overvoltage. These overvoltages will damage the power supply. This is not guaranteed by the external lightning protection system of the LED street light. The two complement each other. The internal lightning protection system of the LED street light must be connected to the external lightning protection system, or overvoltage protectors should be installed on the housing, cables entering and exiting the protected area, metal pipes, and many other components, and equipotential bonding. 


Lightning protection equipotential connection

To eliminate the destructive potential difference caused by lightning strikes to the LED street light, the power line, signal line, metal tube, etc. must be equipotential connected to the overvoltage protector, and the interface of each protection area of the LED street light must be connected. LED street light local equipotential connection, each local equipotential connection of the LED street light must be connected, and finally connected to the main equipotential place.


Set up a lightning protection zone

In addition to power supply equipment, LED street lights will also be equipped with some communication devices to control the switch and brightness of LED street lights. These LED street lights and power supplies need to be placed in the lightning protection area, and the LED street light protection area is directly shielded by the shell.

The function of the LED street light lightning protection device is to connect the protected system to the equipotential system within the shortest time (nanosecond level) so that the equipment ports are equipotential. At the same time, the huge pulse energy generated by the lightning strike in the circuit is released to the ground via the short-circuit line, which reduces the potential difference of each interface end of the device, thereby protecting the LED street light.


Inspection procedure

The LED street light power module must not only be designed by the above requirements but also must undergo strict inspection procedures.


1. LED street light has a constant voltage output function or a constant current output function or a control device with both functions. The GB19510.12/IEC61347-2-13 safety standard should be used to test the LED street light.


2. For the control device that only has the function of controlling the logic change of LED street light, flashing, color, etc., the safety standard GB19510.12/IEC61347-2-11 should be used to test the LED street light.


3. If a control device has both of the above functions, the LED street light should be tested by the GB19510.12/IEC61347-2-13 safety standard.
